PhD funding available for sustainable green barriers research

funding

Funding is available for a four-year PhD studentship to work on a project investigating the feasibility of sustainable green barriers to air pollution.

The BREATHE project will look at how successful ‘green fences’ are at mitigating the effects of road traffic related air pollution on the health and wellbeing of schoolchildren and staff working at the schools.

The successful candidate will work with Sheffield City Council and selected schools in Sheffield to develop green barriers – hybrid structures incorporating physical barriers and living plants – and effective methods for monitoring outcomes. Where possible, ‘citizen science’ approaches to monitoring will be developed to enable staff and pupils to engage fully in the research process.

The successful student will also work collaboratively with students and staff at the University of Buenos Aires and with local communities and stakeholders to design and install prototypical barriers at a school in Buenos Aires and to monitor the outcomes using the methods developed in Phase 1.

It is hoped that this project will demonstrate the effectiveness of locally sourced and manufactured green fences and encourage their uptake to mitigate air pollution in other cities in the global south, with benefits to health, wellbeing and local economies.

The BREATHE project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Departments of Landscape, Geography and Engineering at the University of Sheffield and the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism at the University of Buenos Aires.

The studentship is funded by the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures, which focuses on advancing sustainability research and connecting it with the policy debate around how humans can live in a more sustainable way. It will be supervised by Professor Anna Jorgensen, from the Department of Landscape and Dr Miguel Kanai, from the Department of Geography.

The deadline for applications is 26th March 2018.
